Detention and deportation is impacting South Asians more than ever. Between October 2014 and April 2018, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) arrested over 17,000 South Asians (12,670 Indians; 1,752 Bangladeshis; 1,744 Nepalis, 659 Pakistanis, 292 Sri Lankans, 2 Bhutanese). South Asians go on to experience verbal and physical abuse in detention facilities and court rooms at the intersections of racism, islamophobia, and anti-immigrant sentiments.
There is a dearth of South Asian legal providers who would be able to identify those intersections in addition to potentially offering in-language support of South Asian detained immigrants who are not receiving access to translators or attorneys with whom they can communicate in-language.
